Since the city of San Luis Obispo’s property in its historic Chinatown district was approved for sale to Copeland Properties for $3.7 million, curious community members are eager to find out what’s next for the long-awaited project.
 

Tom Copeland’s company is expected to submit a revised design for its mixed-use project – which should include housing, retail, dining and a hotel – but Copeland and his architect Mark Rawson aren’t talking to the Business Times, suggesting the company isn’t ready to reveal its new plans.

Claire Clark, economic development manager for the city of San Luis Obispo, said before Copeland can move forward with a redesign, a likely lengthy historic analysis must be completed. Two buildings at and adjacent to the corner of Chorro and Monterey streets – the Blackstone Hotel and the Sauer Bakery – need to be studied to determine if and how Copeland will utilize the structures in his plan.
