Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency in Los Angeles and Ventura counties Oct. 14 after two wildfires burned more than 18,100 acres of land and killed two people.

The fires in the San Fernando Valley north of Los Angeles were fed by heavy winds and have forced hundreds of people to flee, according to the state’s Office of Emergency Service. A homeless man and his dog were killed in one of the blazes.

Another person was killed in a fire-related car accident. Because of smoke and low visibility from the Porter Ranch Fire, Metrolink has suspended service on its Ventura Line.
