California voters approved a ban on same-sex marriage Nov. 4 with the passing of Proposition 8, the most highly funded state proposition ever in United States history.
With 99 percent of precincts reporting at press time, 52.5 percent of voters approved the ban. Both sides of the campaign spent a combined $73 million.
Santa Barbara County was the only one in the Tri-Counties to vote against Prop. 8, with 53.1 percent voting no. In San Luis Obispo County, 51.4 percent voted yes and in Ventura County, 53.3 percent voted yes. Prop. 8 opponents filed a suit Nov. 5 with the California Supreme Court in an effort to block the measure from taking effect.
