Port Hueneme Mayor Toni Young, 56, died Dec. 16 following a sudden illness.
Her death came one day before she planned to retire from a 16-year career on the city council. Young is survived by her husband of 38 years, Otto, and three grown children.
She was first elected to the Port Hueneme City Council in November 1992. She was the first woman elected to the council in more than 30 years and the first woman to serve as mayor. While on the council she served as mayor of the city in 1995, 1999, 2004 and 2008.
