A piece of sales tax legislation making its way through Sacramento is pitting brick-and-mortar mom-and-pops against some of their online counterparts.

Assembly Bill 178 would require online retailers to collect California sales tax at checkout. The bill is being championed by physical retailers, especially small ones who’ve seen their sales eroded by online-only competitors.

But other California entrepreneurs who make their living by selling certain kinds of Web advertising say their livelihoods could be decimated as a result of the legislation.
