We’ll take a few words to honor Ray Shaw, a journalist and entrepreneur who died suddenly this month at age 75.

Beginning in the late 1980s, Shaw led Charlotte, N.C.-based American City Business Journals, the nation’s foremost owner of weekly financial news publications.

As a former Wall Street Journal reporter, Shaw rose through the ranks to be president of Dow Jones & Co. Among many talents, he was an expert at picking dynamic editors to run his group of 40 weekly publications.
He pioneered new ideas such as the Sports Business Journal and he encouraged his weekly business publications to experiment with new ideas such as a 40 Under 40 list and outreach to woman and minority-owned businesses.

Shaw’s three decades of work in the business journal world earned him the Distinguished Achievement Award this year from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers.  Our condolences to the Shaw family and to our friends at American City Business Journals.
