Over the past decade, the digital revolution upended the recorded music business and the industry’s biggest players have struggled to find a business model.
But that same digital revolution has opened a plethora of new ways to scratch out a living making, recording or promoting music. The future shape of the music business is being hashed out at gatherings of experts in the Tri-Counties.
“The music industry is the Wild West right now,” said Tim Boris, one of the organizers of Santa Barbara-based New Noise, a music industry and digital media conference that will make its debut in October. “Nobody knows what the correct business model is on any level of the industry. It’s quite interesting to see companies try to monetize the fact that people are using music more than at any point in history.”
