An 8.3 magnitude earthquake in the South Pacific near Samoa on Sept. 29 caused the National Weather Service to issue tsunami advisories for much of the California and Oregan coastlines, including the San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura county coastlines. No exceptionally large waves or damage were reported in the Tri-Counties.

Weather officials had said that some areas of the Central Coast may experience sea level changes with wave fluctuations of about a foot, with bigger waves expected to occur along the coast north of San Luis Obispo. The advisory was not a tsunami watch or warning, and no major damage was expected or reported.

Several ports in the region, including Port San Luis, were closed as a precaution.
