Bio-jet fuel isn’t commercially available yet, but one Santa Barbara company already has a deal to sell 4 million barrels of it.

BioJet Corp. has been working since January to lay the groundwork for a supply chain for renewable aviation jet fuel. The company doesn’t make the fuel itself; it organizes and strikes deals for that step and everything else, from developing farms for feedstocks to getting the fuel to airplane’s tanks on the tarmac.

The spark for the company was the European Union’s big step toward putting a cap on aviation emissions. BioJet Corp. was founded in January, and the next month the E.U. said that more than 2,700 airlines will be subject to its emissions cap-and-trade scheme by 2012.
