Bound for China

While the U.S. auto industry recovers from dismal domestic sales in 2009, thousands of American-made vehicles are flowing through the Port of Hueneme each month bound for a booming Chinese market.

The cars are being made in the Midwest, shipped by rail to Southern California and trucked to the port. From there, they go to Asia, most of them to Shanghai. “Last year, we handled about 10,000,” said Will Berg, director of marketing and public information for the port.

The company in the lead is Global Auto Processing Services, or GAPS, which has had a facility in Oxnard for 12 years and also has centers in Georgia and Alabama.
