Thousand Oaks-based Amgen announced Sept. 24 that it is recalling some lots of its Epogen and Procrit drugs because the vials may contain tiny glass flakes.
Both are injectable drugs used to treat anemia in HIV, renal failure and chemotherapy patients. Amgen said the glass flakes are the result of interaction between the drug and the glass vials it is stored in.
Amgen said it had received no reports of health problems attributable to the glass flakes, and there is “a low potential” for anyone to be affected. However, there are serious potential effects, and Amgen urged any patients experiencing problems to contact their doctors.
The lot numbers and expiration dates of the recalled doses are available at www.epogen.com and www.procrit.com.
