The U.S. Postal Service is considering closing its processing and distribution facility in Oxnard and moving the work to its Goleta facility, a move that would save about $1.8 million and cost the region 79 jobs.
The Postal Service has scheduled a public meeting for Jan. 20 in Oxnard to review the proposal. At that meeting, Postal Service officials will discuss the results of an ongoing study on the consolidation plan, said agency spokesman James Wigdel.
A one-page summary of the preliminary findings of that study shows a net loss of 79 positions. The rest of the jobs at the Oxnard facility will be moved to Goleta.
In early 2010, the Postal Service moved half of its Oxnard processing and distribution plant — the part that dealt with outgoing mail — to Santa Clarita. That left the Oxnard facility to process only incoming mail bound for the Oxnard and Ventura areas. If the Postal Service makes good on its current plans, the Goleta facility would handle all incoming mail for West Ventura County and South Santa Barbara County.
Consolidation of the processing facility would not result in any changes to retail mailing services in Oxnard, Wigdel said.
The Jan. 20 meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center at 800 Hobson Way.
