We were pleased to see a pair of common sense candidates win city council seats in elections held Nov. 8. Longtime Ventura Music Festival leader Cheryl Heitmann won a Ventura City Council seat and will join incumbents Carl Morehouse and Christy Weir, who rounded out the winners. In Santa Barbara, independent business owner

Randy Rowse, appointed to a seat held by Das Williams last year, this time won a four-year term, joining incumbent Dale Francisco and newcomer Cathy Murillo, a strong neighborhood advocate.

Having Heitmann’s and Paradise Café owner Rowse’s experience in meeting budgets and making payrolls on their respective city councils will be helpful in tough economic times. Their common-sense perspective could bring a breath of fresh air to politics in these two cities.

We appreciate their willingness to stand up and be counted.
