Carpinteria-based online learning company Lynda.com has purchased Compilr, a Canadian firm that runs a cloud-based platform for programmers to write and test code.

Terms of the deal were not announced, but TechCrunch said people close to the transaction valued it at around $20 million.

Last year, Lynda.com raised $103 million in its first round of outside funding. Shortly after, it purchased an Austrian video training firm in a move to grow into international markets. Earlier this year, it hired several new executives for a planned global push and announced that it would begin offering its library of instructional videos in Southeast Asia.

Compilr supports more than a dozen of the most popular programming languages that are the basis for Web applications and smartphone and tablet applications, Lynda.com said. The programming platform will become a service of Lynda.com.

“We recognize the growing market demand for programming language instruction and are committed to providing a broad range of high-quality computer programming courses,” Lynda.com CEO and President Eric Robison said in a statement. “This aligns with our learning philosophy and allows us to maintain and grow our market leadership.”

Employment for software developers is projected to increase 22 percent between 2012 and 2022, Lynda.com said, citing the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. “Lynda.com has always been forward looking in providing course offerings that meet growing demand for a wide variety of skills in business, technology and creative,” the firm said.
