Startup Weekend Santa Barbara will not be happening this year. The event was held the second weekend in November each of the past two years.
Santa Barbara startup NextMover won the inaugural event in 2013. NextMover provided users with a cheap alternative to moving companies by connecting people with owners of large vehicles that wanted to make extra money. The company closed in 2014.
Startup Weekend’s parent company was bought by worldwide accelerator Techstars. That changed Startup Weekend’s model from non-profit to for-profit. Organizers said because of that it made the event hard to hold because previous Startup Weekends in Santa Barbara relied on donations from sponsors.
Organizers of Startup Weekend Santa Barbara said in a Facebook post on Oct. 2 they will still work to create opportunities for entrepreneurs throughout the region
