The UC Santa Barbara College of Engineering held a 50th anniversary bash on April 28. There were about 200 attendees at the event, which highlighted the college’s faculty and achievements.

The centerpiece for the UC Santa Barbara College of Engineering’s 50th anniversary bash was “no ordinary time capsule,” said Dean Rod Alferness.

Created by Machine Shop Superintendent Andy Wienberg, the final result was “so nice in appearance” the college decided not to bury it, instead leaving it open for submissions until the end of the quarter, when it will be sealed and bolted to the floor inside the building.

Former and current deans and chancellors Henry Yang, Nat Tirrell, Gene Lucas, and David Marshall spoke to around 200 attendees at the event, highlighting the college’s faculty and achievements. Among them was the school’s history as one of the founding nodes on the Internet, for which a 1982 node directory will be included in the capsule.

Groups like the Technology Management Program, the Society of Asian Scientists and Entrepreneurs, Engineers Without Borders, Unite to Light, and the Institute for Energy Efficiency set up booths for the alumni, faculty and students.

The time capsule is scheduled to be opened on the school’s 75th anniversary.
