The four men and two women who were killed in the Isla Vista massacre were described by friends and family as bright and happy students. Most had lived in California all their lives, while one was born in Taiwan.
James Hong, 20, of San Jose, was a second-year computer engineering major born in Taipei. He volunteered as a teaching assistant at Rainbow Chinese School in Cupertino. Hong, who was described as a quiet, diligent student, was happy to work backstage in the drama department as his classmates took the spotlight.
George Chen, 19, also of San Jose, was a second-year computer science major. He spent his free time as a counselor at the YMCA, and had spent Friday afternoon participating in volunteer cleanup on campus.
David Wang, 20, of Fremont, was a second-year computer engineering major. He loved to play basketball. Fremont Christian High School, his alma mater, plans to dedicate a garden next to its basketball court in his honor.
Katherine Cooper, 22, of Chino Hills, was a fourth-year art history major and member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. She taught ballroom dancing and was described by her family as vivacious and competitive.
Veronika Weiss, 19, of Westlake Village, was a first-year student and member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. She was the captain of her high school water polo team and described by friends as a dedicated student and California girl through-and-through.
Christopher Michael-Martinez, 20, of Los Osos, was a second-year English major. Born and raised on the Central Coast, he had plans to study law in London during the upcoming school year. His father, Richard Martinez, described him as “a very good student.”
