Ventura County faces a considerable challenge this summer as it prepares to replace Chuck Weiss, the outgoing superintendent of schools.
Weiss leaves behind a legacy of fair dealing, community leadership and an enduring legacy of excellence for one of the biggest school systems outside of a major city.
It is that legacy of excellence that allows us to overlook the somewhat extravagant digs he’s leaving behind for his successor – a new county education office headquarters in Camarillo.
But having an overdone edifice should enable the search committee to lure some highly qualified candidates – another reason why Weiss should be remembered for doing a fine job with limited resources and a very diverse group of communities to serve.
