Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill that will require the state to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent compared to 1990 levels by 2030.
Sen. Fran Pavley, D-Agoura Hills, introduced the bill. It amends the 2006 California Global Warming Solutions Act that that requires the state to reduce statewide emission levels to at least 1990 levels by 2020. The 2006 bill also directed the state Air Resources Board to continue to reduce emissions after 2020.
“Climate change is real and, knowing that, California is taking action,” Brown said in a statement.
California is on track to meet the original requirements of the Global Warming Solutions Act, Brown’s office said in a news release. The Air Resources Board previously stated its goal is to reduce carbon emissions to 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050.
The bill is the latest of several bills Brown has signed curbing carbon emissions. Last year, he signed a bill that requires the state to get half of its electricity from renewable resources by 2030.
