Ojai-based SimpliPhi Power announced Oct. 3 that it had contracted with electricity distributor Powerco to build an off-grid renewable energy storage system called Base Power in New Zealand.
The system provides supplemental or alternative energy to areas where upgrades to the network were not deemed to be cost effective. After initial trials, Powerco ordered 20 new units, which are a combination of solar panels and SimpliPhi batteries, with backup diesel generators in case of adverse weather, to be delivered in the next year. The units are also deliverable by helicopter for use in remote locations or emergencies.
“The utility calculated that off-grid distributed and renewable assets combined with storage is more cost effective than extending the reach of the grid by two kilometers, or having to repair the transmission lines of approximately 20 poles,” SimpliPhi CEO Catherine Von Burg said in a news release. “Add to that calculus the environmental benefits of replacing centralized fossil fuel generation and suddenly the cost benefit analysis overwhelmingly supports the Base Power off-grid units — creating a win-win with better energy security for both the utility and their customers.”
New Zealand-based contractor The Downs Group will assemble and install the project.
